Ferion

Ferion is a turn-based multiplayer space strategy game that was originally launched in 1999 and has been continuously updated since then.  It boasts nearly 400k players, though it’s unclear how many of them are actually currently active.  Playing the game is free but there is a fee to unlock more advanced features and including an extending tech tree within the game.

Players start out as a leader of a planetary race. Your goal will be to explore the universe, invent new technologies, build up new planets, design build and manage your fleets and deal with other empires.  Games run for approximately six weeks with Ferion creating new games every week.

The goal of Ferion is simple, take over as may planets as possible.  At the beginning of an arena each player starts with a single planet.  Players can then take control of additional planets near them on the star map.  Once the easy planets have been acquired the game shifts much more towards combat as players employ various strategies to take control of planets from each other.

Astro Empires

Astro Empires is a MMO space strategy game launched in 2006 by Cybertopia Studios.  There are just under 40k players with about 2k of them currently active, among about a dozen different servers.

It uses an interactive star map on which players control planets, each of which have a limited amount of space to build on.  When you start out you have a single planet, but you can explore to colonize other planets.  Astro Empires uses a credit system with players receiving additional credits each out generated by their economy.

Building, research and team play is a huge aspect of the game with no real emphasis on combat.  Players can form clans or guilds allowing them to work together, and trade.  According to a reviewer “This game is best as a “time spender”, something to maybe relax to at night or to waste some time while you’re waiting for something. Overall, it is still a fun, partially addicting game.

Dark Orbit

Dark Orbit is a free massively multiplayer game by Bigpoint games with nearly 60M registered players, of which 50k are currently active.

It is a very PvP, combat oriented game with most of the in game galaxy being a free for all.  You fly around in your ship which you can upgrade.  The game mechanics are fairly simplistic and there isn’t much depth as far as quests.  It basically provides a huge galaxy to players and leaves it up to them to create their own action.

Bulfleet 4.0

Bulfleet is a free space strategy game with currently about 20k players, but a very active community.  You start out with a planet which you can mine to gain resources.  You then can research new technologies, build space craft and collonize the universe.  Combat is not a major part of the game and is “almost frowned upon” by other players, leaving the game with a slightly non-multiplayer feel.

The Lacuna Expanse

The Lacuna Expanse is a Space Strategy Massively Multiplayer Online Game launched in 2010.  The Lacuna Expanse is a region of space with millions of habitable worlds. You can play with or compete against thousands of players as you build your empire, fight off spies in a battle for cold war supremacy, form alliances, search the expanse for lost ancient artifacts, and more.

Each player takes the helm of an empire and then competes against, and form alliances with, other players in a massive land grab pattern.

Stellar Impact

STELLAR IMPACT is an online strategy game taking place in a Sci-Fi/Space Opera universe. It stands somewhere between classics RTS and MOBA/DotA games. Our goal was to create a demanding but rewarding gameplay, based on maneuvers, skills and strategies elaboration. Most of all, we tried to create something fun and teamplay oriented!

In STELLAR IMPACT the war between alies and axis has moved to space and you command a space battleship! You can choose between several ship classes, from the fast corvette to the heavy dreadnought. Make your own skills template according to your preferences: attack, defense, speed and maneuverability, or recognition.

Stratheon

The Stratheon project began in June of 2010. The goal of the project is to create a browser based RTS with real movement, commanding of armies, and battles on a mass-multiplayer scale.  It is continuously under development using the agile development methodology.

At the start of Stratheon you will be brought to an empty planet. How you turn this uninhabited rock into a productive base is up to you.  All planets have three basic resources you will need, ore hydrogen and silicone.  These resources are used to construct bases on your planets.

Starjack Online

Starjack Online is a classic 4X game with deep, yet accessible gameplay that focuses on the technological, economic, military and political development of an empire.  However, unlike many 4X games, Starjack Online gives players powerful tools to automate the routine tasks of their empire, removing tedium and the need for micromanagement.

One unique aspect about Starjack is that almost everything in the game is created by the players.  This includes things like colonies, troops and ships.  The game offers tools that allow players to interact with and manage this content in interesting ways.

SpaceTrace

SpaceTrace is a completely free real time strategy game set in a 3-dimensional simulated galaxy. The goal of the game is to gain points by defeating other players in battle and colonising planets.

You can research new ship-types with special abilities to customize your fleets and gain superiority over your enemies.  Form alliances to gain strength in numbers or play as a pirate to hunt other players for score.
